After lathing my model, I made a two part mold. I soft-soaped my model and profile bats 3 times before securing my profile bats half way around my shape. I then made a plaster mix and left it to set, then turned it over once it was set, and took away the profile bats. I cleared the plaster of clay then soft soaped everything again and did another plaster mix. To finish I turned my plaster around again so the bottom of my shape could be seen and soft-soaped my feed. I made a final plaster mix to create my full mold.

I cut off my profile designed shape with a saw, and also cut off a separate piece which is to be the feed for my mold. I used wet/dry paper again to smooth out the flat edges I sawed off, using 240, then 600. I covered my pieces in a plastic air tight bag to keep them wet.

Once I had lathed to my profile shape I continued to lathe but used wet/dry sand paper to smooth my shape. I used 240 paper first and then moved onto 600.

After I centered my plaster I used calapers to measure the width of my design and lathed down until it fit round my shape. I then referred to my profile design and continued to take away any parts of plaster where my profile touched the plaster until i had reached my desired shape.

To begin our cruet set project I made a keramicast plaster mix using 1.8k of keramicast to 1L of water ( I used 4L of water and 7.2k of Keramicast. I used a cuphead to wrap round a piece of styrem and cottled up with string. Once this was set I removed the styrem and started to use the lathing machine.
When I begun to lathe  I started by centering my plaster by making release marks with the end of my chisel until it was even all the way round.

Cruet Set Project.

Our new project for the ceramics rotation is to make a cruet set. I have adapted a shape similar to a ginger jar used in Chinese culture. I’m looking at the relationship between flowers and their meanings and why you give people certain flowers for different occasions. I’m also looking at the history of ginger jars and what they are meant for and used for, and the history of flower patterns in ceramics.
